Say Shopify shows 140 orders for yesterday and Google Ads shows 0 purchases. Your campaigns kept spending all night, and Smart Bidding spent it learning from a number that is wrong.
When Google Ads conversion tracking is not working on Shopify, the cause is usually one of seven things, and most of them take minutes to check. This guide runs them in order, from the fastest to the slowest, with the Indian twist most guides skip: COD-heavy stores on GoKwik or Shopflo checkouts.
Most broken Shopify tracking comes from a removed purchase tag, a disconnected app pixel, a wrong conversion setting, duplicate tags, consent rules or a third-party checkout. Reporting lag explains the rest, and it is not broken at all.
Start with the symptom you see. It narrows the list fast.
| What you see in Google Ads | Most likely cause | Check |
|---|---|---|
| 0 purchases for the last day or two | Reporting lag | 1 |
| 0 purchases since late August 2026 | Old purchase tag in additional scripts | 2 |
| Status shows Misconfigured | Broken or disconnected tag | 2, 3 |
| Purchases in All conversions but not Conversions | Purchase set as secondary | 4 |
| Roughly twice the Shopify orders | Duplicate tags | 5 |
| A steady share of orders missing | Consent, checkout or click-matching gaps | 6, 7 |
Check the dates first. Google says conversion reporting can lag by 24 to 48 hours, so yesterday will almost always look weaker than Shopify.
There is a second kind of lag. Google can report a conversion up to 90 days after the click, depending on your conversion window, so recent periods look worse until late buyers come in (Google Ads Help).
Look at the conversion action's status in Goals > Summary too. Google's status guide says "Awaiting conversions" means no conversions in the last 7 days, and it usually means the action is under 48 hours old, campaigns are paused or traffic is low (Google Ads Help). A new action that shows this is normal. One that has run for months is not. If a Performance Max campaign looks worst, run our Performance Max ROAS checks before you touch budgets.
If your purchase tag sat in additional scripts, it stopped working. Shopify set 26 August 2026 as the deadline to upgrade Thank you and Order status pages, and it upgraded stores that had not moved by then automatically (Shopify Help).
Shopify says additional scripts for tracking "aren't supported" on the new pages, and the section has been view-only since 28 August 2025 (Shopify Help, upgrade guide). A Google Ads event snippet pasted there years ago by an agency now fires nothing.
The fix is to move purchase tracking into a pixel:
checkout_completed, Shopify's purchase event. Shopify runs custom pixels in a lax sandbox and says it does not support them, so someone on your team has to own the code (Shopify Help).Pick one route. Shopify also says to disable old scripts once the pixel tests clean, so you do not count each order twice.
The app only tracks purchases if its pixel shows Connected. Go to Settings > Customer events and look at the Status column next to the Google & YouTube app (Shopify Help).
Then check the Google side inside the app:
If the status column shows a problem, a "Misconfigured" status in Google Ads usually follows. Google defines that as conversions that "stopped recording entirely due to a setup error or a broken tag" (Google Ads Help).
A purchase action set to secondary records orders but hides them from bidding. Google reports primary actions in the Conversions column and uses them for bidding; secondary actions only show in All conversions, "for observation only" (Google Ads Help).
The Google & YouTube app sets Purchase as primary by default. It sets add to cart, begin checkout, page view, view item, search and add payment info as secondary (Google Merchant Center Help). Problems start when an old manual purchase action stays primary next to the app's one, or when someone flips the app's action to secondary while cleaning up.
Check the count setting while you are there. Google recommends "Every" for sales, which counts each purchase after an ad interaction, while "One" counts only one conversion per click (Google Ads Help). A repeat buyer who orders twice from one click shows as one sale on "One". Google applies count changes only to future reporting, so old data will not fix itself.
Double conversions almost always mean two tags fire for the same order. Google says duplicates happen when you run multiple Google tags, or when you set up tracking before installing the Google & YouTube app (Google Merchant Center Help).
Common pairs that cause it:
Google's fix: open Tag Assistant, place a test order and read the "Hits sent" tab. If you see two Google Ads purchase hits, keep one source and disable the other. Google warns you to disable only the duplicated events, because removing the wrong one hurts tracking further.
Here is why it matters in rupees. Say, as an illustration, you spend ₹50,000 a day on Google Ads and your real ROAS is 2.5. Double counting shows Google a ROAS near 5, so Target ROAS bidding pushes harder into traffic that only returns half of what the report claims.
Consent can stop pixels for some visitors. Shopify says pixels "operate based on the consent obtained" in regions where you require it, such as the EEA and the UK (Shopify Help).
For a store selling mostly in India, this matters in two cases:
If the Shopify Pixel Helper shows "Pixel is awaiting consent" on a test order, you have found your leak.
They can, but the purchase setup usually sits with the checkout provider, so check it there. Many Indian brands run COD and prepaid orders through a one-click checkout, and the providers document their own way of sending purchases to Google Ads.
What the providers' own documentation says (checked November 2026):
Two failure patterns follow from this. If neither the checkout nor Shopify sends the purchase, Google Ads misses those orders. If both do, you get check 5's duplicates. Test one COD order and one prepaid order separately, because they can take different paths.
For COD stores, remember the gap does not end at tracking. A purchase that Google records can still come back as RTO, so read Google's ROAS next to your RTO adjusted ROAS.
Test one real order from the store to the Conversions column. It settles most arguments about whose number is right.
checkout_completed fired with a green dot.The cheapest fix is noticing on day 1, not day 10. Every day a purchase tag stays broken, bidding optimises on wrong data and the team reads a ROAS that does not exist.
This is the kind of leak Clevrr AI, an AI performance marketer for D2C brands, watches for. It joins Google Ads and Meta Ads data with Shopify orders, stock and delivery data every day, so a tracking break shows up as a gap between ad-reported purchases and real orders in the morning report, not in next month's review. If Meta has the same problem, our guides on the Meta pixel not firing on Shopify and Meta purchases not matching Shopify cover that side.
These are the three questions Shopify brands ask most once tracking is back up.
Expect up to 24 to 48 hours. Google says conversion reporting can lag by that much, and conversions can keep arriving up to 90 days after the click depending on your conversion window. Judge tracking on data at least two days old, and use Tag Assistant on a test order if you need to confirm a fix today.
Duplicate tags are the usual cause. If the Google & YouTube app and an old snippet, a Tag Manager tag or a custom pixel all send purchases, Google counts each order more than once. Run a test order in Tag Assistant, check the Hits sent tab, and keep exactly one purchase source per order.
Use Every for purchases. Google recommends Every for sales because it counts each purchase after an ad interaction, while One counts only one conversion per click and suits leads. Changing the setting only affects future reporting, so note the date you switched when you compare ROAS before and after.
When Google Ads conversion tracking is not working on Shopify, check in this order: reporting lag, the 2026 Thank you page change, the app pixel's status, primary and count settings, duplicates, consent, then your checkout provider.
