BetterHood sells a posture corrector. Most people buy one and never need another. Yet 35% of its retargeting budget was going to people who had already bought, until the team caught it and recovered ~₹2.7L in a month (source).
If your product is a one-time buy, or your prospecting numbers look too good, you probably have the same leak. This guide shows how to exclude existing customers from Meta ads in 2026, how to check how much you spend on them today, and why exclusions still leak.
Exclude them when repeat buyers are rare, when you are judging a campaign on new customer acquisition, or when your breakdown shows a large share of spend going to past buyers. Do not exclude them by reflex.
Meta reaches existing customers by default, even with broad targeting. Those people convert easily, so they make cost per purchase look cheap. Jon Loomer's warning cuts both ways: they may have bought anyway, which inflates results, but cutting them without a clear problem can hurt performance (source).
A quick way to decide:
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| One-time product (posture corrector, mattress, appliance) | Exclude from prospecting and most retargeting |
| Consumables with refills (skincare, coffee, supplements) | Keep a separate, capped retention campaign |
| Prospecting campaign judged on new customer CAC | Exclude, or use Acquire new customers |
| You have no idea what share goes to buyers | Check the breakdown first (next section) |
Use the audience segment breakdown in Ads Manager. It splits spend and conversions into Existing Customers, Engaged Audience and New Audience, but only once you have defined those segments (source).
If the segments are thin or missing, the breakdown misleads you. Fix the definition (Step 1 below), then come back and read the numbers.
Say a brand spends ₹6L a month on Meta, and the breakdown shows 20% landing on Existing Customers. That is ₹1.2L a month reaching people who already own the product. For a one-time buy, most of that is leaking spend. (Illustrative numbers, not client data.)
You exclude existing customers from Meta ads in 4 steps: define the Existing Customers segment, build a complete customer list, add it as an exclusion, and use Customer Lifecycle Strategy for prospecting. Each step closes a different gap.
Go to All Tools, then Advertising Settings, then Audience Segments. Add every purchase-based audience you have: customer lists of past buyers and website custom audiences built on the Purchase event (source).
Use the widest version of each audience. Website custom audiences only hold 180 days, so a brand older than 6 months needs a customer list too (source).
Export your customers from Shopify as a CSV and upload it as a customer list custom audience. Include every identifier you have: email, phone, first name and last name. More identifiers give Meta more ways to match a person (source).
Three India-specific traps:
So plan a manual upload, or a sync app, and refresh it. Common Thread suggests a monthly refresh, since stale lists let past buyers back in (source).
In each prospecting and retargeting ad set, add your customer list and purchaser website audience under custom audience exclusions. Meta removed detailed targeting exclusions, but custom audience exclusions still work (source).
Which ad sets need it depends on the job each one does:
| Ad set | Exclude existing customers? |
|---|---|
| Broad or interest prospecting | Yes, always |
| Website visitor or add-to-cart retargeting | Yes, for one-time products |
| Catalogue (DPA) retargeting | Yes, unless you cross-sell other products |
| Retention or win-back | No, this is the one place they belong |
Write the rule into your naming convention, for example a "NC" tag on every ad set that should exclude buyers. Then anyone on the team, or your agency, can spot an ad set that is missing it.
With Advantage+ Audience, Meta treats excluded custom audiences as tight constraints, not suggestions (source). Since August 2026 you can also create exclusion-only custom audiences. They can only remove people from an audience and cannot be turned back into a regular custom audience, so nobody can target your buyers by mistake (source).
At the top of a Sales ad set, Customer Lifecycle Strategy gives you a choice. "Reach new and existing customers" is the default. "Acquire new customers" limits conversions to people who have never bought (source).
Since October 2026, picking Acquire new customers also excludes buyers from your own conversion data automatically (source). Know the limits:
Meta removed it. The cap used to limit how much of an Advantage+ shopping campaign went to existing customers, and Meta's help centre now says it is no longer available and the same can be done manually (source).
The manual rebuild uses two ad sets under one campaign budget (source):
This suits consumable brands that want some retention spend, just not an open tap. If you would rather not exclude at all, Meta's value rules let you bid less on existing customers instead (source).
Usually because your customer audience is incomplete, not because Meta ignores the exclusion. Jon Loomer lists 3 holes: data that misses some buyers, imperfect matching, and, least likely, delivery that ignores the exclusion (source).
| Hole | What causes it | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete data | Old buyers past 180 days, offline or marketplace orders, broken Purchase events | Add a full customer list; fix tracking |
| Low match rate | Customer lists typically match 20% to 70% of rows, never 100% | Upload phone and name, not only email |
| Dropped exclusions | Duplicated campaigns often lose their exclusions | Check exclusions after every duplicate |
Sources: match rates and holes from Jon Loomer; duplication from Common Thread.
Broken Purchase events hit twice. They shrink your website purchaser audience and they weaken the new automatic exclusion. If Meta and Shopify already disagree on purchases, start with why Meta purchases don't match Shopify orders.
Treat the exclusion as something to monitor, not a one-time setting. Lists go stale, events break and duplicated campaigns drop exclusions, so the leak comes back quietly.
A simple weekly check:
This is the kind of leak Clevrr AI, an AI performance marketer for D2C brands, watches for every morning across ads, store and inventory. BetterHood's ad account had no idea what Shopify knew. Clevrr connected the two and removed the overlap automatically, and the team recovered ~₹2.7L in a month (source). The BetterHood case study covers how they scaled after that.
Exclude existing customers from Meta ads when repeat purchase is rare or when you judge a campaign on new customers, and check the breakdown before you do. Define the segment, upload a full list with phone numbers, add the exclusion, and use Acquire new customers for prospecting. Then keep checking, because every exclusion leaks a little.

Exclude them if your product is a one-time buy or if you judge the campaign on new customer CAC. Existing customers convert easily, so they make results look better than they are. For refill products, keep a separate retention campaign with a spending limit instead, and check the audience segment breakdown before you cut anyone.
Most often your customer audience is incomplete. Customer lists match only part of your buyers, website audiences hold 180 days, and broken Purchase events miss orders. Duplicated campaigns can also lose exclusions. Upload phone numbers and names, refresh the list monthly, and recheck exclusions every time you duplicate a campaign.
Not with a built-in Shopify feature. Shopify Audiences only works for eligible Shopify Plus stores in the US and Canada, and merchants have found no native segment sync to Meta. Indian brands usually upload a customer CSV each month or use a third-party sync app. Format phone numbers with +91 to improve matching.
